Fixed Wheel Bicycles

Fixed Wheel Bike

Fixed gear bicycles (sometimes called ‘fixies’) were some of the first bikes ever created. They feature a single speed drivetrain, and lack gears, brakes, and a freewheel mechanism. It was fixed wheel bikes on which riders completed the Tour de France up until 1937, when derailleurs were favored for their multiple gears not requiring a wheel change.

Fixies have had a recent rise in popularity, as their simplicity means they aren’t heavy to carry, they require little maintenance and riding with no breaks has cult status in some areas! However, riding bikes without two independent breaking systems on public roads in the UK is prohibited.

Chain

Bike Chain Jewellery

The bicycle chain transfers power from the pedals to the drive-wheel. It came into use in the late 1800’s, with many French inventors patented chain driven bicycles during this time. In 1880, the Bush-Roller chain was developed by Hans Reynold in Manchester. It allowed and is still used today, almost completely unchanged from the original patent.

Cogs

Heritage cycling gifts 6

Cogs are what make up the gears on derailleur bicycles, seen as early as 1871 with the invention of the Ariel geared bicycle, which steadily gained popularity over fixed wheel bikes. Geared bicycles were banned from the Tour de France until 1937, allowing riders to change from uphill to downhill without dismounting to changing wheels.

Saddle

Bike Saddle

The bicycle saddle provides support and comfort for the rider. Early bicycle saddles were little more than blanks of wood, but 1989 saw the development of anatomical saddles for female riders to accommodate wider hips.

Minimal refinements were made during the early 20th century, with bike manufacturers beginning to include foam padding a leather to enhance comfort. Today’s bike saddles often feature gel cushioning to improve circulation and ventilation,  often with two separate lobes for the riders buttocks.
